Alican Garcon was between a rock and a hard place after college. The choices were: get a 9-5 or pour all his energy into tattooing. Can you guess which he chose? The Retro Minimal artist works with small spaces and minimizes details in his work, transforming memories from actual photographs to the skin.

“It’s an indescribable feeling to tattoo photographs taken in different parts of the world at different times. For example, I have tattooed a family portrait taken in Mexico in the ’60s as well as one of a family in the US in the ’80s,” he writes on Bored Panda.

Gorgu shares with work on his Instagram account, Pigment Ninja, which has garnered a whopping 19,000 followers. When asked what it is about tattoos that he finds particularly beautiful, Gorgu tells A Plus:

“People can freely exhibit the things [that] they love. That’s awesome!”

Social media works in mysterious ways, it’s a platform for everyone to publish their ideas and art, but also it has become the source of inspiration for a lot of different kinds of people and artists.

These inspirations have drawn out hashtags that have formed communities. Take for example, the tattoo community, there are tons of artists and human canvases interacting with one another.

Essentially, sharing their ideas and scheduling sessions from all over the world, these communities sometimes begin trends outside of their hashtags!

And then it takes off like it’s a power of it’s own onto the popular page, the latest to come from the tattoo community to explode as a trend on Instagram in general- ear helix tattoos. And for all the failed trends social media has managed to conjure up… this one is kinda cool!

The ear helix is the sensitive cartilage part of our ears that we sometimes see adorned with ear cuffs, links, and earrings. Now, forget all about uncomfortable jewelry or things that easily fall off and go missing into the abyss where endless bobby pins and hair ties also go missing.

Selfies are fun. Some people—most people—hate them, they hate how shallow they are, they hate how obnoxious selfie-takers tend to be, but it still doesn’t take away from the fact that selfies are just super fun to take. They’re also quickly shaping our culture. Some studies show we spend up to five hours a WEEK taking selfies. But are they really that bad?

A lot of people think the sudden emergence of selfie culture is turning people into narcissists. They think taking selfies of ourselves smiling and seemingly happy is just creating a fake identity and is nothing more than cries of attention—shallow, phony, desperate. These people think the selfie culture is simply a method of self-promotion and narcissism, nothing more.

Other people argue that selfies are inherently harmful because of the self-image insecurities we might develop as a result. When we take a selfie, we want to look our best—better than our best. We skew angles and lighting, put on filters, and even edit via photoshop, just to look better than we actually do. Selfies force us to be ashamed of our imperfections and push an impossible beauty standard narrative.

I personally don’t agree with most of these arguments. While there’s definitely merit in some of their ideas, I think they tend to go in a slippery slope direction, and that’s dangerous. Selfies aren’t the root of all evil—narcissism and insecurities have always existed in history. And while it’s true some selfie-takers tend to fall in those categories, it’s simply wrong to generalize everyone in them.

To me, selfies are a more modern form of expression and communication. It is the modern way of calling our friends and family and telling them what we’re doing and how we’re feeling—after all, a picture is worth a thousand words. And sometimes, selfies can be incredibly beneficial. Sometimes, selfies can even save your life.
