An Open Letter to the Family I Lost Contact With
People come and go, but family is hard to forget when life gets in the way. Here is an open letter to the family that I lost contact with over the years.

Life happens, and while life is happening, we often lose contact with people who used to mean the absolute world to us. Just because we lose contact doesn’t always mean we no longer care about them, it just sometimes means that our lives are different and they don’t fit as easily into them as they once had. This can happen for a variety of reasons: people move away, kids go off to college, a fight splits people up (even those who don’t have direct contact with the people fighting). Once we come to terms with the fact that, sometimes, drifting apart is inevitable, the thought of losing people who were once so precious to us makes a little more sense, although I don’t think it’ll ever fully resonate in our minds.

We lose contact with people all of the time: our old professors, our high school friends, people on our floor last year. And somehow, the world keeps keeping on. What makes the world seem to come to a screeching halt, however, is when we lose people close and dear to us like best friends and family members. We all go through it; our best friend backstabs us by getting with our ex-boyfriend, our cousin disowns our family because their beliefs don’t coincide with ours, or sometimes, severe circumstances result in a major divide between certain family members or sides of the family begin to butt heads.

So here’s an open letter to the family I lost contact with,

I still love you guys will all of my heart, and that will never change. Situations and series of events happened where, at that time and place, being in each other’s lives didn’t seem to quite work out like they should of. Mistakes that weren’t ours were made and somehow it resulted in the downward spiraling effect of our relationship.
