Miami U College Freshman Found DEAD After Night of Drinking

What is it with Miami University lately? First the greek life hazing scandal and now an 18 year old college freshman, Erica Buschick of Gurnee, Illinois, was found dead in her dorm after drinking vodka and champagne…

According to the Daily Mail:

“By 10pm that night, according to the incident report released to the college newspaper The Miami Student, the freshman and her roommate began drinking alcohol, polishing off two bottles of champagne between the two of them.

The 25-page report states that Buschick and the other student then filled an empty bottle of Dasani water about halfway with vodka and made their way to a house party at a friend’s apartment off campus.

Silent killer: According to a police report, Erica and her roommate had polished off two bottles of champagne between the two of them, followed by half a bottle of vodka and additional vodka shots at a house party

By 10.45pm, Buschick and her friend drank all of the vodka from the plastic bottle, and their friends then brought out a large bottle of high-end Grey Goose, which they said was filled with cheap vodka.

After ‘pregaming’ with the vodka, the group headed to Brick Street Bar Uptown to continue partying.

On the walk over, the report states that Buschick fell and was later deemed too drunk to enter the drinking establishment.

A friend then called the girl’s roommate, telling her that Buschick needed to be taken home.

Buschick and her roommate eventually got into a cab together and headed back to their dormitory, arriving there sometime after midnight.

The taxi driver who took the two apparently inebriated women to Morris Hall would later tell police that upon exiting the car, Buschick collapsed to the ground face first, leaving her with multiple scrapes.

The 18-year-old was unable to walk without assistance, so her roommate asked the taxi driver to help her to their second-floor room.

Concerned that Buschick might fall again and hit her head, the cabbie said he laid her down on a bean bag chair and told her roommate to look after her.

The roommate fell asleep at around 1am, but not before snapping a photo of Buschick on the bean bag chair, which she posted onto an Instagram account. Police would later delete the image.”

This is not only sad but also crazy, and also pretty scary to me, mostly because it doesn’t seem like she drank an absolutely insane amount of alcohol. I know at least personally I am probably guilty of drinking this much as a freshman in college. It just goes to show that anything can happen and how careful young drinkers really need to be.

Her father was quoted in The Chicago Tribune as saying;

“‘She was my baby girl,’ the devastated father-of-three said or Erica, adding that while he does not blame anyone for her death, he would like Miami University to take steps in order to make sure that what happened to his daughter would not happen to anyone else.”

Heartbreaking.

The reality of race playing a role in police brutality is an issue we’ve been facing for a while, but people just don’t seem to learn from others’ mistakes. Over the past five years, a number of cases of high-profile police brutality steeped in racial bias have occurred. Although a number of groups and organizations have risen up to combat this growing threat, the idea of an officer shooting an unarmed black person isn’t foreign to anyone.

Los Angeles Times

Unfortunately, it’s impossible to determine exact statistics about fatal police shootings since there isn’t an actual database available on it. This lack of accessible information, described by FBI director James Comey as “embarrassing and ridiculous” is why many people falsely believe that there is no issue between police and African Americans.

The Seattle Times

Still, we can look at various independent studies that have been conducted with the hope to raise awareness of the Black Lives Matter movement. One study conduced by a professor at University of California, Davis suggested “evidence of a significant bias in the killing of unarmed black Americans relative to unarmed white Americans, in that the probability of being black, unarmed, and shot by police is aobut 3-49 times the probability of being white, unarmed, and shot by police on average.”

The Seattle Times

That’s a potentially staggering figure, and one that shouldn’t be ignored. Still, however, these crimes continue to plague the United States, adding to our current international political unrest. Even worse, it takes the lives of individuals and ruins entire families and communities.

Washington State University

An independent analysis of data from The Washington Post had similar findings to the Davis study. “The only thing that was significant in predicting whether someone shot and killed by police was unarmed was whether or not they we black,” the study said. “Crime variables did not matter in terms of predicting whether the person killed was unarmed.”

Head over to the next page, where we’ll examine more data on the murder of unarmed African Americans by police.

I never want to have a roommate every again in my entire life. They smell, they are often naked, and they don’t have boundaries.

The following is a list of 13 reasons why I refuse to have a roommate ever again; aside from the fact that roommates are awful in  general. I’m a true fan of solitude.

*NOTE: SOME OF THESE STORIES ARE ABOUT THE SAME ROOMMATE – I DIDN’T HAVE 13 CRAZY ROOMMATES (ALTHOUGH SOMETIMES I WONDER)*

Yah, you read that right. A couple of years ago my roommate was a complete and total wierdo. She was constantly accusing people of doing things that were intended to harm her in one way of another. This girl was the epitome of “the world is out to get me”. One weekend in particular she had a couple friends from home visiting, and they were staying in our tiny apartment with us. I was in my bedroom, which was connected to the kitchen, doing some studying when I heard my roommate start cooking breakfast with her friends. They were cooking for about 10 minutes when one of her friends asked if she could help herself to some orange juice, to which my roommate replied, “Yes, but grab the one in the back because the other one has butter in it” (Yes, ladies and gents – BUTTER). Her friend naturally was freaked out and asked why. My roommates answer was “Oh, I think she’s been drinking my orange juice, so I put butter in it”. Can you say crazy?

This roommate was also my cousin – I think it’s important to know that before we get into the story. She was my best friend for my entire life, and so when she moved to my city, we decided we would live together to save on rent! About halfway through the year she got a new boyfriend who was over all the time, and they would leave their dishes and garbage everywhere, so naturally I asked if she could keep it tidy, because it was getting gross (what an understatement). This was the start of WWIII because from this point on we didn’t get along. She stayed disgusting, but now wanted to make my life a living hell and decided she would destroy all of my condoms. Luckily I discovered it before I used any, but really… This kind of revenge is just uncouth.

In my first year of college I lived in a townhouse on campus with 5 other girls. I went to high school with one of them, one of them became my best friend, 2 of them were from the same town and were best friends, and then there was this one girl that got kicked out of her original townhouse because her roommates hated her, and we said it was fine if she lived with us. We were being kind, ok? Oh, the regret. Throughout the year we started to realize our dishes and utensils started to drop in numbers. It was fine because between the 6 of us we had enough dishes to get by, but it was still sort of odd. When this roommate finally moved out we went into her room to find all our dishes piled up in a tower – along with all of her caked on foods from the year.

No relationship is perfect, and if you date anyone long enough you will inevitably hit bumps along the way. But at times, it can be difficult to know if something is just one of those bumps, or a sign of a more serious problem. Open communication is usually the key to getting to the root of any problem, but sometimes the other person just doesn’t want to talk. In that case, what’s your next move?

This young girl came up with her own plan, one reminiscent of something you might see in the Goonies. She and her boyfriend had been dating for a while, but she felt that the spark had gone out of their relationship. While he had at first been attentive and loving, he now seemed distant and reserved. She was frustrated, but didn’t want to end their relationship.

So she decided to test him. While he was at work, she wrote him a heartfelt letter explaining that while she loved him, their relationship simply wasn’t working anymore. When she was finished, she carefully put the letter in an envelope and left it out on his desk where he would be sure to see it. This by itself isn’t the strangest thing in the world, but what really makes the story unique is what she did next.

Knowing he would be home soon, she crawled under the bed to wait. She wanted to see his reaction to the letter firsthand, to know for herself what his true feelings were. After a no doubt long boring period of lying smashed between mattress springs and that part of the floor that never gets cleaned, her boyfriend finally came home. She became deathly silent.

She listened as he padded across the room and began reading the letter, eagerly awaiting his response. But when he was finished, she did not hear what she had hoped. He did not seem at all distraught by her note. Instead, she heard him pull out his phone and call someone. Who could he possibly be calling at this moment? Her blood ran cold as he began to speak to the mysterious person on the other line.

“Hey babe, it’s done. No, I didn’t have to say anything. She left me, I’m coming over to celebrate. I love you too.” He picked up his keys and left. When she was sure he was gone, she crawled out from underneath the bed, her body heavy and shaking. Of the many awful scenarios that had run through her mind, this may have been the worst possible one.
