5. You talk to your friends. Ask them how they feel about their classes and future. It’s hard to hear them say that the work is hard, but they actually enjoy what they’re learning about–especially when you can’t say the same.

4. Your grades are slipping, because no matter how hard you try to connect with the material–you can’t invest in it. The future starts to look way more intimidating now that you can’t depend on your initial dream.

3. You speak with your TA or professor about your concerns. Ask more in-depth questions about the career path and how you can use different techniques to engage more. They’ll give you good study aids so you can pass, but the answers to your career questions convince you that this path isn’t for you.

2. You wander around aimlessly, kind of depressed to have your dream fall apart so spectacularly. Two years in and wanting to change your degree can be an intimidating thing to do. The worst part are all the questions from your friends and your family. Changing your life plan can make you feel alone, and even worse, it can make you feel like you’re a disappointment to your parents.

1. You accept that you’ve changed as a person and go to your academic adviser for help to find something more suitable. Changing your path will be difficult, but it’s not impossible.
