9 CRAZY Sorority Pledge Stories That Will Have You Lol’ing

Sorority recruitment is the way in which individual sororities select girls – or “pledges” – to be a part of their chapter.  While this is typically a very exciting time for sisters and pledges alike, it can also be a time in which “hazing” can take place.  Hazing, an action that is condemned by the majority of Greek life today, was common practice in the past, and included making new pledges of a certain chapter do undesirable, and sometimes dangerous, things to prove that they “deserved” to be there.  As shown in the following stories, sometimes these activities can lead to lawsuits, injury, and even death.

9. Penn State Altoona

A pledge, who chose to go unnamed, reported that she was required to stand among her fellow pledges with her nose against a wall while the sorority sisters screamed derogatory comments at them.  If one of the pledge members moved, her head was slammed against the concrete as punishment, leaving all the pledges bruised as a result.

Further, she was required to scrub the floor with her finger nails when she refused to cook dinner for the sisters, and was asked to drink “pitch black water”.

According to the pledge member, “They would test us on one of the sorority’s prayers or songs, and if we got it wrong they would call us fat or ugly until we cried.  So many of us cried in front of them.”

Graduate Ravital Segal reported that in 2009, while pledging the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority house, she experience hazing that nearly killed her.  While blindfolded, she was placed in the backseat of a car and was told to chug a 64 ounce water bottle filled with spiked punch, interspersed with shots of vodka.  She woke up the next morning in the Dartmouth Hitchcock Intensive Care Unit, with bruises, cuts, two broken teeth, and no memory of anything that happened after the drinking.   Three other pledge members were admitted to the hospital the same evening, all with alcohol overdose.

The worst part of the story is this: according to her doctor, her BAC was a .399.  A .4 BAC is the point at which one can fall into a coma, or die.

Segal did not report this until after her graduation in 2012, due to fear of social ostracism.

During this particular reported hazing activity, all the pledges were allegedly forced to strip down until completely nude.  Then, they were all told to sit on paper towels while watching a lesbian adult film.  If any pledge’s paper towel was too wet by the end of the film, they were kicked out of the pledging process, as this sorority’s attempt to bar any homosexual women from becoming a sister.  Further, allegedly, the individual with the wettest paper towel was forced to eat all the others.  Truly revolting.
