If you’ve ever been on a college tour, then you’re no stranger to how many facts are thrown at you in such a short amount of time. Whether they’re facts about the campus, the classes, or the student life you couldn’t possibly wrap your head around the plethora of information you’re given. Hofstra University, a medium sized university located in Hempstead, New York, is no different, but whether you’ve been on a tour of Hofstra or not, here are 20 facts you might not know of.
20. In 2014, WRHU, Radio Hofstra University, won the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Marconi Radio Award as the top non-commercial radio station in the country.
19. Kate and William Hofstra had tickets for the Titanic voyage.
18. The official flag of the Netherlands was held in Hofstra Hall for safe keeping during World War II.
17. Christopher Walken went to Hofstra as a Dance major before becoming a famous actor.
16. According to the Hofstra Historian, Hofstra Hall’s Parlor Room is supposedly haunted.
15. Hofstra was originally a satellite campus of New York University (NYU).
14. Hofstra was the first private university on Long Island.
13. Professor Herbert Deutsch in the Music Department is the co-inventor of the Moog Synthesizer, one of the first synthesizers in history.
12. Although Hofstra doesn’t have a football team, three current NFL players are alumni: Willie Colon (Guard for the New York Jets), Marques Colton (Wide Receiver for the New Orleans Saints) and Kyle Arrington (Cornerback for the Baltimore Ravens).
11. William Hofstra owned a lumber company which could be why there are so many trees on campus (that and because it’s an arboretum).
