20 Things I Have Learned From My Lovely Southern Roommate

I met my roommate Colby on bid night. Two older girls in the house who were best friends were assigned to be Colby’s and my “Rose Sisters,” or girls who we hung out with in order to meet older members of our sorority. So throughout bid week, Colby and I got ready for pairs and went over to the house together.

At first, Colby intimidated the hell out of me, which is funny because she is an absolute, for lack of a better word, nugget. I think it was mainly because Colby looked like the kind of person who would hang out with the cool kids in high school. You know, the ones that would only go to the theatre productions I was in so that they could receive extra credit for their English class?

Luckily, Colby has turned out to be one of the greatest friends I have made at school, and I have learned a lot from her. Having been born and raised in a west suburb of Chicago, my interactions with people from the South were very limited until I got to college. Colbs, being from South Carolina, has taught me a lot about Southern culture, and how to be a functioning human being. Here are the top 20 things I have learned from my  nugget of a Southern roommate.

20.) You can take a girl out of the South, but you can’t take the South out of the girl.

We may be in Indiana, but sometimes her Southern shows and I remind her she’s not in Rock Hill anymore.

19.) Northern schools and Southern schools may or may not have different history textbooks.

Colby is not a racist, in fact she is one of the most tolerant people I have ever met. She did, however, recount a time where her history teacher taught her class that “nobody really won the Civil War.”

18.) How to properly and consistently use the contraction “y’all.”

The greatest pronoun to ever be created.

17.) Not all Southern girls love camo…but all Southern girls have a monogrammed something.

Since I don’t have a middle name (and a lack of knowledge for knowing what’s hip) I never knew that monograms were an actual thing. Living with somebody from the South taught me otherwise.

16.) Timmy Riggins is the ultimate goal when it comes to finding the perfect guy.

Long hair, hot body and a mysterious but sensitive personality… #relationshipgoals.
