5 Thoughts Everyone Has After Coming Home From College

“When do I go back?”

It won’t take long for you to miss how your life was at school. You didn’t have to cook for yourself, your friends lived down the hall from you, and you were free to do anything you wanted, but now that you’re home again you feel like you’re back in high school. Your parents are always asking what your plans are for the night and while you appreciate them caring that you’re safe, it still feels weird to tell them what you’re doing every time you leave the house. After all you lived on your own for a whole year and you survived just fine.

“I miss ‘fill in the name of any one of your best friends’.”

You and your friends always ask each other “How will we get through break without each other?” but when you’re all saying your last goodbyes before heading home for the summer, you really do start to wonder how you’ll go nearly four months without the people that made the year so memorable. Of course you can always visit each other but it’s just not the same as being able to walk two doors down the hall to order pizza at one in the morning. If your group chat wasn’t always buzzing before, it certainly is now that you all don’t live in the same zip code.

“I did not miss this.”

Believe it or not, there were some things that school actually made easier for you. For example, you probably never had to cook for yourself at school. You were used to just swiping your student ID and eating dinner a few minutes later but when you’re home it’s an entirely different story. The house isn’t always stocked with your favorite late night snacks and meals aren’t always served right when you decide you’re hungry. You’re also always being told that your diet should consist of more than just cereal and french fries and even though the food at home tastes significantly better, it won’t take long for you to appreciate your dining hall.

“When will I have a day off?”

You’ve spent two semesters studying and working hard in school so you deserve a few weeks to just relax… think again. Most likely if you’re in college you also have to work; between paying for college and having money for 10 piece chicken nugget meals you’ll want to make as much money as possible over the summer to avoid working a lot during the school year. Even though very few people would rather work than spend time with their friends, you’ll find it especially hard not to skip work to go to the beach with your friends instead.

“Wow this year went by fast”

This thought will run through your mind a million times. You’ll see dorm stuff being put out in stores and you’ll think of how excited you were a year ago to go dorm shopping for the first time. Every time you drive by your old high school, you’ll see a different senior’s name and school scrolling across the bulletin and you’ll remember the day you took your picture next to your school’s sign. Any time one of your friends puts up a Throwback Thursday picture of your friend group, you won’t believe how many memories you’ve all made since then. You may not realize it at school, but time really does fly when you’re having fun.
