3. Unknown University
In 1959, Richard Swanson was attempting to pledge Kappa Sigma Fraternity. As a part of their hazing ritual, each pledge was presented a large piece of liver covered in oil the size of a sandwich. The pledges were required to swallow the piece of liver without chewing, which Swanson tried and failed to do several times. However, on the final attempt, the piece lodged in his throat. An ambulance was called, but the medic was not told about the liver, so Swanson died two hours later.
2. Southeast Missouri State University
Michael Davis was a pledge of Kappa Alpha Psi in 1994. However, a part of their hazing process was a two week session of violent beatings, which lead up to Valentine’s Day, when each brother had their own station at which they delivered a form of physical abuse to each pledge. Davis was injured to the point of broken bones and bleeding within his brain, which ultimately lead to his death.
1. Tulane University
In 2008, some Pi Kappa Alpha brothers were accused of pouring boiling water, cayenne pepper, and pepper spray down their pledge’s backs. The water got hotter and hotter every night, and the pledge that screamed the least received a bid. After this was brought to light, the fraternity was shut down, and the responsible brothers were arrested.
