A Letter From All Restaurant Workers: To The Customer Who Threw A Menu At Me (2)

5. Seriously, tip your server. I understand if you don’t because your server is a horrible person, but if your server did everything right, you need to tip them. We apologize if the kitchen messed up your order and you had to wait a while for your burger to be recooked or whatever issue that occurred, but that was not our fault. Tips are how servers get paid. At many restaurants, your server gets paid a couple dollars an hour, and many times, those couple dollars go to taxes. Thus, they rely on their tips for money. At other restaurants, the servers have to dedicate a lot of their tips to the hosts, bussers, and other workers. So, tipping is very important if you choose to eat out. However, sometimes carry-out workers work under the same conditions, so you should also consider tipping even when you carry-out.

4. Please expect to wait. If you are going out to eat, we want you to have quick service. We really really really do, even though it might not seem like it when we give you a buzzer and tell you it’s a hour wait. When we say we will get you seated as soon as possible, we will.

3. Please don’t move to another seat without telling us. Sometimes, sections don’t have a server. Or, a server in the section you want to sit at has a ton of tables all at once. When you move to another seat, you might not get waited on right away. We sit you where we sit you for a reason, so please tell us nicely if you don’t like where we sat you so we can find you somewhere else that you do like!
