An Open Letter To Parents and Students on Freshman Move-In Day

The first hour and the drive home

The first hour I was at school I felt this huge lump in my throat that would not go away and this sickening feeling in my stomach thinking it would never go away. Not to ruin the ending for you but it does. The time right after your parents drop you off is the most surreal feeling I’ve ever felt. I didn’t know anyone, all of my things were in different places, I didn’t know my way around campus, and all I wanted was my mom. Thoughts ran through my head like I wanted her to turn around and come back and get me, but if you wait out the first couple hours, the feelings subside and you start really enjoying yourself. I remember my mom telling me that she cried the entire way home after leaving my campus parking lot. It was one of the hardest things she’s had to do. We texted that night and I remember her telling me that as the time went by, it got easier. Weeks later we were both adjusted just fine.
