An Open Letter To Every Kid That Has Lost A Parent (3)

You are going to grow up, and you are going to grow up fast – probably too fast.  You will have an understanding of one of humanity’s greatest mysteries well before you should – death.  Do not let this untimely knowledge jade you.  Rather, use it to your advantage, and allow yourself to become a light for those who are only beginning to understand what you already have felt a million times over.  Use your understanding to develop a newfound appreciation of those around you.  Hug your loved ones a little tighter.  Smile a little more warmly at strangers.  Do the things that make you happy with enthusiasm and fervor.

Never let your memories of them fade.  When your best friend does something that reminds you of your Mom, tell her.  When a funny memory of your Dad strikes you, allow yourself to laugh and tell everyone all about it.  When you have children, let them know how wonderful their grandparent was.  Remembering is going to hurt a lot, at first, but you are going to eventually hold those precious memories you have with them dearly.

Most importantly, know that no matter what, your parent loves you so much and wants only the best for you.  Every day when you decide to get up and do your laundry, or brush your teeth, or if you cried two times instead of three today, they are so proud of you.

In the words of Albus Dumbledore, “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if only one remembers to turn on the light”.
