How to Break the Ice With Your New Roommates

The beginning of freshman year is scary enough, not to mention having to learn to live with a new person/people. If you don’t meet your roommates ahead of time, move-in day can be extremely awkward for the both of you. Thanks to today’s technology you almost always have the opportunity to do a little Facebook stalking on your new roommates, and most people text or meet up with them before school starts. Even with today’s media and technology, breaking the ice with your roommates can still be difficult especially if they seem nothing like you. Here are 10 ways to get over the anxiety and awkwardness with the people you will be sharing living space with for the next semester or two at least:

1. If you have the opportunity, meet up before you go to school. This can eliminate the shock of seeing your roommate(s) for the first time on move-in day. Your roommate has bright blue hair and an eyebrow piercing?! At least you knew that before she walked through the door of your room for the first time. Meeting up in person, whether at a restaurant for lunch or orientation, can reduce the initial shock of what they look like or act like, and you’re sure to feel a lot more comfortable.

2. Ask a lot of questions. Where are you from? What sports did you play in high school? What time do you go to sleep/wake up? Are you messy? Why was your ex boyfriend in jail? Oh he’s visiting next Saturday…? Yeah, I forgot to tell you, I’m going home for the weekend!! Asking questions not only lets you get to know the person your roommate is, but you can also get a glimpse of what it’ll be like to live with them. You may realize that you have more in common than you originally thought!
