Why Being a Nerd in College Isn’t That Bad

Brainiac, loser, geek, poindexter; there are a lot of ways to say nerd. Movies and television shows always portrays nerd as people that are ostracized because of their choice to focus on academia rather than social or athletic aspects of school. But real life has benefits to being a nerd that the movies and shows don’t show.

C’s get degrees, A’s get jobs

Chances are that if you are a nerd at this stage in your life, passing a class isn’t good enough for you. Getting a B+ on a test you could’ve gotten an A on drives you to do better the next time just for the sake of getting that A. You may not see it now but following graduation your hard work will get your degree and at least a few jobs offers that a C average wouldn’t even hear of.

You have more energy

Going out three, four or even five nights a week every single week is exhausting for both your mind and your body. Not to say that being a nerd means you don’t have fun but it means that you likely know how long you need to do your work and going out this weekend will cut into that time. Instead of getting back home at 5 in the morning you’ve probably been asleep for hours which does wonders for your ability to think and move..

Intelligence is sexy

The sexiest part of a person is their brain. Being capable of carrying a multi-faceted conversation with several different topics makes you much more attractive than you already are. Don’t believe it? Talk to a gifted six-year-old and they immediately become much cuter than they already are. Speak to someone with the mind of a six-year-old and you’d wish humans came with a mute button.

You’re More Distinguishable

Not to say that not being a nerd makes you blend in with the crowd but its not often you see a nerd that doesn’t have their own style. Whether its being a video game fan, urban chic, country genius or even classic Urkel, nerds tend to seek out comfort in their own styles rather than conforming to everything else. This is extremely handy in a world where standing out is the new fitting in.

You Are Who You Are

No falseness, no false pretenses, no shroud personalities. If you think you might be a nerd, then you probably are. You can try to hide it but it’ll come out without your knowledge. Whether someone says that Star Wars Episode 3 was the best one and you cringe or you overhear a conversation about LARPing, your inner nerd will come out. So let that become your outer nerd. Don’t fight it, just accept that it’s a part of you and rock out with your nerd self.
