Sir Paul McCartney Opens Up To Florida College Students

If you’re an avid music fan and you don’t attend Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, prepare to be jealous! On October 23rd, the former member of The Beatles with 21 Grammy Awards, Paul McCartney, joined poet Billy Collins for a discussion on McCartney’s career with Rollins College students amazed in the audience. Held in the college’s Knowles Memorial Chapel, the venue filled its capacity after the high demand forced students to enter a lottery for tickets.

The talk came one day before McCartney was to play a huge concert in Jacksonville, Florida and perhaps the college event was a last minute decision, because the school didn’t announce the event until the day of. The lucky winners of the ticket lottery got to hear stories spanning his entire career from The Beatles to Wings and so forth. During the hour-long chat, he treated the audience to a performance of “Blackbird and he let the wide-eyed students in on his secret insecurity with writing music.

In response to a question about his writing process, he revealed, “I tell students all the time, ‘Look, I don’t know how to do this.’ Every time I approach a song, there’s no rules. Sometimes the music comes first, sometimes the words—and if you’re lucky, it all comes together.”

In such a short period of time, he shared the experiences working with the late John Lennon, drug culture of the 1960s, his appreciation of cover songs, and much more. Needless to say, this was an event every attendee would remember and appreciate forever. “[McCartney] wanted it to be intimate and mostly for students,” said Rollins College President Craig McAllaster. “That’s why they filled most of the seats. It’s a wonderful thing to have someone of his stature and significance give his time and talent to Rollins College.”
