Socializing in College: How To Not Get Stuck In Your Room Playing Video Games

giphy14The most important part of beginning your college career is making friends. Do not be fooled, social life is almost just as important as your study life! You don’t want to be that guy/girl who’s depressing and alone. So, in order to not get stuck playing video games in your dorm every Friday night, you need to make friends.giphy16

Here’s how:

5. Get Involved. – I know it sounds watered down and cheesy, but when your school pushes the whole “be involved” thing, it’s legitimate. It’s basically the nice way of telling you to get a life. So, join Greek life, try out for a club sport, find organizations that fit your interests. It’ll help to keep you busy and connect with like-minded people. Plus, there are so many opportunities! You have chances to travel, make a difference, and build a reputation. College is the perfect time to make the most of your life. So, if you get invited somewhere, immediately say:

4. Get Networkin’- This should become your new main goal during your college years. Going out and meeting people to build connections will not only help to better you as a person, but prepare an ideal path for your future. Networking allows for you to develop relationships that can provide you with opportunity, awesome things to put on your resume, and even jobs. Some of the best ways to network are through fraternity/sorority, leadership organizations, student committees, and student government. Working your way up in your major is another obvious way to make a name for yourself. Join a prestigious club or group relating to your studies, and then obtain a leadership position.

3. Get a Job- It doesn’t have to be a big job, or something fancy. Just something to fill your schedule, make a few extra bucks, meet a few coworkers, and to put on your resume. Universities even provide career services that can get you a job on campus (or somewhere near campus). Part-time jobs will prepare you for a solidified job in your field once you graduate.

2. Get an Internship- Now, you may be wondering why this is a separate category from jobs. Well, this is because internships are 1.) TYPICALLY unpaid and 2.) TYPICALLY relate to your major. Whereas before my advice to you was to simply go out and work wherever you could, internships are better for your resume as they pertain to the type of work you would be doing after graduation. They are a great way to be productive in finding a way to spend your life, and sometimes you can even get paid for it, and who wouldn’t love getting paid for doing something you actually enjoy?

1. Attend Events- Just get off your hiney and go do stuff! Go to football games, hang out at Starbucks, play pick up sports, attend all the fun crap during welcome week. Just live! College is suppose to be the best years of your life. Don’t waste them. Make the most out of each day. Do whatever you can so that when you look back on it, you feel like you did it right. You will never have another chance to be this young with so many choices and paths available to you. So try new things and write your story, because the next few years will go by faster than you can say:
