Why Going Home For School Breaks is Like a HS Reunion You Don’t Want To Have (2)

5. The awkward small talk. Sometimes you run into people you barely talked to in high school, but you both know you went to school together so you say hi. Then that leads to the awkward small talk filled with questions you know they couldn’t care to know the answer to. It’s just a formalities thing and the sooner the awkwardness is over the sooner you can move on with your life. “It was nice to see you!” Riiiiight.

4. You run into the people you’d rather avoid. There might have only been one or two people you would rather not run into while you’re at home, but you somehow manage to run into them anyway. You could say hello and fill the time with awkward small talk or you could simply pretend you never saw them and walk away.

3. People bring up memories you tried to forget. It can be nice to relive memories and remember all the good times you had in high school, but you pushed some memories out of your mind for a reason. You don’t remember that one time that one kid did that one thing and you’re glad you don’t.

2. “How’s college?” This question really isn’t that bad, but figuring out how to answer it can be a struggle some times. What exactly do you mention? The parties (if you go to them), the long grueling hours of studying, the endless all nighters you’ve had to pull, how you almost failed one class, the friends you’ve made, the clubs you’ve joined, etc.? Or do you simply give them a vague answer and say it’s good.

1. Everything. Just everything. You didn’t sign up to go to a high school reunion, so having one forced on you could suck. This isn’t to say that you won’t go to your actual high school reunion, but that’s not for a long amount of time. For now you’d be content to not see anyone you didn’t already make plans to see.
