A Letter to my Awesome College Dad

Dear Dad,

I know I don’t say it much, but I love you.

I’m thankful to have you as my father because there are so many things I’ve learned from you. When I was younger I didn’t appreciate you that much because I didn’t know you. I always thought you hated me because you never told me you loved me. It wasn’t until I got older that I realized you are a man of your actions; you showed me you loved me.

Thank you for everything you’ve done. Thanks for coming in my room at one in the morning to kill that little baby spider that I was so terrified of. Thanks for not getting upset with me and telling me to go back to bed. Thank you for all the driving up and down the road to take me here and there. Thank you for doing all the things that I can’t remember.

I’m thankful you’re my dad because you were taught everything you know by your father. I’m so thankful for you and granddad because you two were the ones that kept me sane. If it wasn’t for you two I wouldn’t know anything about cars, and I also wouldn’t know how to make anything on my own. Once I get enough money to buy a house I won’t have to worry about whether or not I will be able to fix it and put things together on my own because you taught me. I remember when you would go out in the yard and fit your car how much I wanted to watch you and learn about stuff.

Thank you for being a man and my father. You showed me how a woman should be treated, and also the kind of man that I should marry. You showed me that I don’t need to run around town and find love in someone else because you give it to me at home. You showed me that actions speak louder than words and that I shouldn’t believe everything I hear. Thank you for being the first man I ever loved. A father’s love is very important in a daughter’s life and I’m glad you were there.

Thank you for being such a nerd. I guess I was lucky to be born with your intellect, but the older I got made me appreciate it. As a kid I hated how much I knew because other students would look at me like I annoyed them. Now, I don’t care. I’m a “nerd” that would prefer to read a book or write instead of going to a bar and getting drunk. And thanks for being so goofy and funny. You have a great sense of humor and thanks to you once I start laughing I can’t stop…no matter the situation.

Thank you for treating me like your daughter even though you wanted a son. I’m laughing now because you have a baby boy that will be born in about a month, but you never treated me like you didn’t love me. You never abandoned me or tried to get rid of me. Thank you for meeting my mother, though, because she is a wonderful woman, but this letter is for you.

Thank you for listening when I need someone to talk to every now and then. Thank you for not giving your opinion or thoughts and just listening. Some people talk hoping for input, but I enjoy the silence of thinking.

Thank you for being my dad. Even though I’m going to college this year I will take all of  your lessons with me. There are some kinds you can leave home, but your wisdom isn’t one of those.

Thank you for not being a statistical black father. The media always portrays black fathers as being deadbeats and not caring for their kids, but that’s not you. There are deadbeat parents in all races and regions and there are mothers too.

Dad, I hope after reading this you realize how much you are loved. Even though sons will be born to carry on your last name and grow up in to you daughters will marry a wise man that’s like their father. Even though I can’t carry on the family name I can carry on your wisdom and love with me into the future. One day when you are no longer here I will remember how blessed I was to be born and have you as a father.

Thank you for being a father, husband, brother, son, and a wonderful man. I love you, Dad!
