5 Phrases Bobcats Are Tired of Hearing

Via MSNBC

What can I say? I love Ohio University, and I’m sure my fellow Bobcats back me on how amazing it really is. But as a proud Bobcat, I have stumbled upon some very irritating attitudes and assumptions from those who do not have the privilege of calling Ohio University their hOUme. Take a look at what makes Ohio University students cringe.

5. “You must love being a Buckeye!”

Ummm… no? No scarlet and grey here. We practically bleed green. What’s this nonsense about “The Ohio State University,” anyway? Are those three letters really that important? Bobcats do it better in the band department, too. I don’t understand all this fuss about the “best damn band in the land.” Oh, and to set the record straight: it’s Rufus, not Brutus. He’d kick buckeye-butt in a fight, anyway.

4. “Isn’t that a party school?”

Don’t get me wrong, we Bobcats know how to have a good time. C’mon, have you seen pictures of HallOUeen? Here at OU, though, we also know how to get down to business. After all, we do happen to study at an accredited institution with rigorous courses in fields such as nursing, journalism, law, engineering, and education. Oh, and let’s not forget our atmosphere of social change. Not only is our student body calling out societal perceptions of race and rape culture, but also we just so happen to have the only LGBT center in Southeastern Ohio. No big deal or anything.

3. “Oh, that’s in Columbus, right?”

Heck no! Athens is what we call home. I get excited any time it’s mentioned, and why wouldn’t I? In Athens, you’ll see everything; whether it’s mid-winter and you see a guy dressed up as Ana and searching for Elsa, or it’s springtime and you are serenaded by flash mobs of our various a capella groups, you’ll witness the random and the unique.

2. “There must not be a lot to do in the hills.”

For your information, the hills are beautiful, especially in the fall. Secondly, at Ohio University, your weekends have so much potential for a good time: parties, fests, coffee shops, movies, improv sketches, hiking trails, sports, street music, diners, bakeries, bars. We really do have it all.

1. “I heard it’s just like Miami.”

I heard it’s better than Miami*
