An Open Letter To My First Ever Roommate

Most people come into college scared, a long way from home, and in desperate need of someone who understand us. Walking into your freshman dorm is intimidating, and trying to find friends can be a scary and nerve-wrecking thing. That is, until your roommate comes along. From the welcome hug and awkward hello, your roommate is your very first friend. Sure, it’s awkward to declare sides and set boundaries, but in no time, your roommate will become the one you’ll never forget — for better or for worse.

Be honest, there’s no one you’d rather sit on the ground eating chips and cookie dough with while watching the VMAs. You’ll never forget all those themed parties that you went a little too all-out for or the late night study sessions, but mostly you’ll never forget the one who was by your side throughout it all. You might not be as close now, heck, you might even be at different schools, but I think we all owe our first roommate a big thank you for getting us through freshman year.

Thank you for accepting me.

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not the greatest of roommate picks, but you stuck through my side throughout it all. You helped me smuggle fruit out of the dining hall, took infinite amounts of Macbook selfies, and listen to me sing off-key to Spice Girls. For that, I can never repay you.

Thank you for being my partner in crime.

Freshman year can be hard, but it would’ve been way harder without you by my side. From our very first frat party to the concert that neither of us remember, you truly are the MVP.

Thank you for keeping me out of trouble.

You were always by my side for the shenanigans, but when it came down to purely dumb decisions, you weren’t afraid to put me in my place. If it weren’t for you I would have worn some truly questionable outfits and have eaten way too many cookies at the dining hall.

Thank you for always wanting to drink on Thursdays.

Our lives weren’t hard and we probably could’ve waited until Friday, but you were always willing to crack open a bottle of wine in our dorm room.

Thank you for letting me use your closet.

There is nothing more stressful than finding the right outfit, but thanks to you I always looked good during our nights out. Oh, and sorry for that dress I never gave back to you.

Thank you for getting me through finals week.

If it weren’t for you, I would’ve been walking around the library in circles trying to figure out what each of the seven library floors mean. Thanks for always being my study buddy and keeping snacks in your book-bag.

Thanks for giving me the best first year of college that you could.

Sure, we had our disagreements and sometimes you wanted to punch me in the face, but you gave me the year that I’ll never forget. I don’t know what I would’ve done without you.

A lot of things happen in four years. You move on, move away, and sometimes even move in to an apartment together, but nothing will ever top the very first year with your very first roommate.
