5) The upsets: Everyone loves an underdog, and that is as true on the football field as it is anywhere else. Some of the greatest games in college football history were won by the underdog. And without the underdog, there’s no historic Cinderella story. And we all love a good Cinderella story.
4) The rivalries: Maybe it’s sick and twisted, but we love rivalries because of the hatred that exists between two schools, their fans, and their towns. In a rivalry game, there is always a chance that drama will unfold. The Holy War between BYU and Utah is anything but religious, and for an entire week leading up to their game, OSU fans want to rip the throats out of any Michigan Wolverine they see (and vice versa). Rivalries get the blood pumping, and they make every weekend more exciting.
3) The school pride: This is something that sets college ball apart from the NFL. It’s more than just a game, where one team plays another. It is one school vs. the other, one student body vs. the other. When the football team is making a big-time run, you can bet there’s going to be plenty of students rallying behind them, every step of the way. A win for the boys on the field is a win for everyone.
2) The traditions: Traditions are what set schools and teams apart from each other. These traditions let students, alumni, and fans get involved with the game. From Texas A&M’s “12th Man” section to Nebraska’s Tunnel Walk, traditions define the game day experience of every school.
1) The Saturdays: The rest of the things on this list are all great, but none of them would be as sweet if they didn’t all happen on the best day of the week. There’s no class or work the next day, it’s the start of the weekend, and we are all a little more carefree on Saturdays. It’s simply a perfect day to kick back, relax, and enjoy some college football. So here’s to all the upcoming fall Saturdays that will, no doubt, bring us as much excitement and enjoyment as every other season.
