13 Things You’ve Learned by the End of Your 1st Semester (2)

9.  Your future is entirely up to you.

One of the most important things you’ll realize by the end of that first semester is that you can accomplish a lot when you work hard. Once you’ve poured weeks of studying into one exam, you realize that your future is really yours for the taking, and no one else’s. The world opens up when you’re on your own, and some days it feels like you can achieve everything you set your mind to- probably because you can.

8. It’s kinda cool to be educated.

At family parties now, you can join the intellectual conversation about politics and hold your own. Your horizons widen a little, understanding the world just a little more than you did before. Okay, yeah, it’s only the first semester, and there’s so much left to learn, but you feel like bragging about all the cool stuff you know now. Who knew it was cool to be the nerd all along?

7. Every dollar is sacred.

It was shocking and disheartening when you had to turn down that invite to Chipotle because you only have $4 to your name after you bought textbooks. Where all the money goes, the world may never know. All you know is that you owe your family an apology for only being able to make them a card for Christmas this year.

6.Coffee is the best friend you ever had.

There should be love songs written for coffee, you’ve come to realize. Even if you don’t like the taste, sometimes it’s your last life line at 2am. Where would you be without it?next
