15 Reasons You Should Call Your Parents More Often

A few weeks ago when he stepped onstage to accept an Oscar award for his role in the movie Whiplash, J.K. Simmons gave a heartfelt speech which ended with a plea for everyone to call their parents.  It was a sentimental comment made by a man who was clearly very touched to have won.  With the countless acceptance speeches that followed as the award show progressed, some of us may have even forgotten about it.  That’s why we’re reminding you about it now.  There are plenty of reasons why you shouldn’t let J.K. Simmons’ message go unheeded.  Call your parents, guys.  Do it.

15. Because why shouldn’t you?

Call your parents. You don’t need to have any specific reason in mind.  Just call to say hey.

14. Communication wasn’t always so easy.

Your parents will tell you, back when they were in college, they probably didn’t even have a telephone in their dorm room, much less a tiny one they could carry around with them.  This is 2015.  You have no reason not to take advantage of our great technology!

13. It’s good to hear what’s going on at home.

You probably don’t realize how much you miss all the little, mundane details of “back home” until you’ve been away for a while.  It’ll be nice hearing Mom or Dad talk about something silly like the washing machine breaking or the dog getting sick.

12. It might make their day a little brighter.

Have you ever called someone who wasn’t expecting a call from you?  They’re always so pleasantly surprised.  Let your parents know that you were thinking of them and it’ll just about make their day.

11. They have tons of wisdom and can offer great advice.

Somehow, parents can always sense when something is amiss.  Even if you don’t tell them you have a problem, they’ll know, and they’ll give you the best advice ever.
