20 Things only SUNY Oswego Students Understand (4)

5. Long Island
You’re either from Long Island or you know 10 people from Long Island. You still don’t know why there are so many people from Long Island because you have asked all of them why they came to Oswego and you have never gotten a straight answer.

4. Who the Heck is Marano?
If you are an upperclassman, you have yet to call the Campus Center “Marano.” You felt betrayed when they renamed it so you feel a subconscious refusal to refer to it by its proper name. Marano, if you’re reading this, thank you so much for your donation and we will keep trying.

3. The Snow
What they say is true: Uggs don’t count as boots. Come March, you completely forget what campus looks like because it has been covered with snow since October and the snowbank in the quad is basically there until May. The snow sticks to the sides of the buildings (and your clothing) because, in Oswego, it always snows sideways.

2. It’s FREAKING Cold
You get way too excited when temperatures get above zero in the spring. There is always wind, which means below-zero windchill all winter-long . You are so thankful for the underground tunnels and you wish the rumors about the ropes were true.

1. Weather No Longer Phases You
Being right on the lake makes for a lot of extreme weather. For example: 50-mile-per-hour winds, multiple feet of snowfall within a couple of hours, 90% humidity with a 0% chance of rain, hurricane/tornado warnings, torrential rain, etc. The worst part is, all of this can happen in one day. Then, when you go home and your family says “it’s so windy!!!,” you simply feel a gentle breeze.

All in all, living at our beautiful school on the lake can make our lives a struggle, but we wouldn’t want it any other way.
