8 Things You Shouldn’t Be Wasting Money On In College 2

4. Going to the movies.

Movies are so expensive these days, it’s not worth paying to see them unless it’s something specific that you’ve been geeking out over for two years while it’s been in production.  Wait until you can get the movie on Redbox, or make friends with someone who’s good at procuring downloaded films.  (Not that we condone this kind of behavior.)  Or, even better, find something fun to do that’s free.

3. Student loans you don’t desperately need.

Even though, deep in our heart, we know it’s not free money, receiving student loans can certainly feel a lot like free money.  That’s why you shouldn’t take out more than what you absolutely need to survive.  Every penny is going to come back and bite you in the ass when it’s time to start repaying.

2. Coffee shops.

Coffee is so cheap to make at home, even if you use a Keurig or fancy creamer.  Why spend $4 on a latte from Starbucks when you can make a perfectly good coffee at home for $0.50 or less per cup?  We all know those fancy schmancy whipped cream mocha latte drinks are delicious, but they’re also high in calories and super expensive!

1. Anything charged on a credit card that you don’t already have the money to pay for.

If there’s one mantra you need to learn right now and remember for the rest of your life, it’s this one.  Don’t charge anything on a credit card if you don’t currently have the money in the bank to pay for it.  That’s it.  Charging purchases you can’t pay for is how people end up in massive debt, and once you get yourself into a hole like that, it’s incredibly difficult to get out.  Charging stuff on credit cards and then paying off the entire balance at the end of the month is a great way to build up your credit score and get in the habit of responsible spending, but never purchase more than what you can pay for in full.
