The Big, Messy Debate On Whether Or Not Teachers Should Have Tattoos Continues…

Tattoos are really fun. They’re some of the best ways people can express themselves, whether they’re getting their favorite saying, a design they’ve made themselves or a commemoration of a lost loved one. But tattoos aren’t appropriate in every situation. A lot of the time, visible tattoos on your arms or on your neck and up might lead to discrimination in terms of employment.

A lot of jobs, especially ones in which you’re trying to sell something or interacting with a customer/client directly, won’t hire you if you have visible tattoos. This can cause issues for a lot of people who have gotten tatted up in the past without considering the potential repercussions. In fact, it’s estimated that 42% of all U.S. adults have some kind of tattoo on their body.

This is a pretty large number, bolstered by the United States’ 21,000 tattoo parlors. A lot of artists and designers decide to go into the field of tattoo artistry because the barrier for entry is relatively low, meaning you can succeed so long as you’re proficient at your job. Tattoos are easy to get, with the more simple designs costing about $50. If you’re looking to get a full sleeve, however, you could end up paying a couple hundred bucks by the time it’s all said and done.

The national average cost of tattooing is $100 per hour, which sounds like a lot until you realize just how much work can be done in 60 minutes. Tattooed individuals tend to be reverent of the designs they get on their bodies, as you’d expect them to be of permanent markings they acquire. About 43% of people with tattoos consider their ink to be their most important attribute, while about 5% of these individuals have tattoos that cover most of their body.

Depending on where you are in the world, tattoos can be more harmful than just preventing you from getting that job you want. There are currently 13 countries in the world in which you can be fined or even arrested for having certain illegal religious, political or racist tattoos. These countries are mostly either Socialist or Islamic nations, so those in North America have nothing to worry about.
