College Bomb Threat Proves that Yik Yak Isn’t Really Anonymous!

Turns out everyone’s favorite anonymous app, isn’t as anonymous as we all thought.

On Tuesday November 4th, a University at Albany Yik Yak user had posted that they were planning to “blow up the school.” The University Police Department released an e-mail on the following Wednesday to the schools student listserv. The email, seen below, revealed that the police department combined it’s efforts with the university’s Information Technology Services as well as Yik Yak itself to determine the I.P. of the student who posted the yak.

While it is a good thing that the police was able to catch the student that made the threat but this scare has revealed one key fact: your yaks can be tracked. So yakkers beware. It may take a great deal of effort, the help of the police, data services, and Yik Yak themselves, but your yaks are not 100% private.
