The College Guide On How To Make It Onto The Dean’s List At Your School

Depending on your major and school it be challenging to make it onto the Dean’s List in college. But below is a guide to help you succeed and make it on to the Dean’s List your next semester or quarter!!

1. Go to class everyday. I know this seems like an obvious one, but sometimes we can get lazy and think that a certain class is easy and we don’t necessarily have to go to class in order to succeed in that class. However unless you feel ill, go to your class! Often times, professors teach concepts in class that are not in your textbook, or they give you hints about what is going to be on test, or what you need to know in order to succeed in the class, and you won’t know this valuable information unless you go to class.

2. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. It can be quite intimidating asking a question in class in front of a huge lecture hall; however, if you do not understand a concept it is likely a lot of other people in your class do not understand it either. So don’t be afraid to ask your professors questions, they will make sure you grasp the concepts better and explain it in a different way if there is confusion. Or if asking a question in a big lecture hall is not your thing, you can also email your professor or talk to your professor after class.

3. Go to office hours. Teachers have office hours in order to help their students, so go to them! If you have questions about anything this is the perfect time to ask them. It also shows your professor that you care about their class and definitely makes you stand out and make a good impression on the professor. It can also be useful later on if you need a letter of recommendation from the professor.

4. Always do your homework. Again, this probably seems very obvious, but often times we think it is no big deal if we skip doing our homework for a class. Although depending on the class, homework may not be a huge part of your grade; however, often times homework reviews concepts you went over in class and help you prepare for your upcoming tests, so if you do not do the homework you will not be as prepared on the concepts for your upcoming tests.

5. Study at LEAST 3 hours a day. This includes doing homework, or reviewing the material you covered in class. This is the bare minimum you will need to spend a day if you want to succeed in your classes.

6. Review your lectures or class material before and after your class. A good way to retain information is to read your class lectures or review your class material before and after your lecture. This means you will have covered the material three times so you will more likely be able to retain the information later on.

7. Always do the extra credit if your teacher offers it. Extra credit is free points towards your grade!!! You would be dumb if you do not take advantage when a professor offers extra credit. Often times the assignment isn’t too difficult, and it is a great way to boost your grade.

8. Always review your test after your professor hands it back. Often times we just look at the letter grade we got on our last test and don’t actually review what problems we missed on a test. It is key to look over your review and see what you got wrong and why you got the answer wrong. It could have been you made a silly error, or it could be you didn’t understand the concept the question was talking about. Whatever the case maybe, find out what the correct answers are and make sure you understand what you did wrong that way you do not make the same mistake later on down the line in your future tests.

9. Don’t stress yourself out taking too much units. Don’t take too many units that you don’t have enough time to balance out your studying for each class. It is better to take 15 units and do well in the classes rather than take 18 units and do only average in the class. You can also take classes over the summer or during winter session if you need to take additional units in order to graduate on time.

10. Keep Calm and Relax. There will be times when you studied hard or stayed up all night to perfect your essay and you still did not receive the grade you hoped you were going to get-that is college for you. Just work hard, study harder and you will succeed and make it onto the Dean’s List at your school!
