For American rapper and songwriter Kendrick Lamar, everything seems to be going his way. Debuting as a teenager back in 2004, Lamar found early success at only 16 years of age. Born in Compton, California, Lamar was raised on welfare and section 8 housing. When he was 8, witnessed his idols Tupac Shakur and Dr. Dre film their music video for “California Love,” which has been cited as a significant event in young Kendrick Lamar’s life.

In high school, Lamar was a straight-A student and released his first mixtape when his was 16, under the moniker K-Dot. The mixtape brought him local recognition, and Lamar quickly went on to sign a contract with the newly created indie label, Top Dog Entertainment. His career continued to take off from there.
