An Outsider’s Look At College Hook Ups

Hooking up, by some, is considered an unofficial form of art. There are specific DOs and DON’Ts they assume the other person also knows. There are even nonverbal cues so people can hook up at loud parties or clubs. I didn’t consider myself one of these people, but before I knew it I was swept into the swirling cauldron that is college hook up life. What happened next took me by surprise.

HookUp

I’ve considered myself a slut. Because of society’s standards, others would not look at a scrawny, discreetly bisexual male and think slut. But the word, “slut,” to me means sexual insecurity. When people use it at you it comes from their insecurity that you might have more sex than they do. When you use it against yourself it comes from an inner insecurity that you have a lot of sex and feel like you are not supposed to. That being said, the most important thing about hooking up is that you have to want it- and so do they.

Hooking up with no romantic attachment can be treated by some as a vice, similar to drinking or smoking. Don’t make another person your vice. Hook up with someone because you are invested in them as a human being. You don’t need to pretend its anything more than it is, but remember why you want to hook up with someone. Most often it is to feel wanted, so make them feel wanted to. up-next-page
