7 Board Games College Students Loved in the 90s

1. Hungry Hungry Hippos

“We’re hungry, hungry hippos!”  Seriously who didn’t love playing this game? Ready, set, press that lever does as fast as you can and have your hippo “eat” as many of those white marbles!  Obviously the winner with the most marbles won.  Such a simple fun, game, yet brought out out so much competition.  Admit it girls, you always wanted to be the pink hippo.

2. Twister

This is what I like to call a “human board game!”  No matter how old you are, this game always kept you on your toes! Twisting your body to reach specific colored spots on a plastic mat and trying not to fall down, well that always made things fun and interesting!

3.  Dream Phone

Alright girls, if you didn’t love picking up that giant pink phone and dialing those handsome 90’s hunks, then you need to play this game!  This game was the version of “Clue” but for girls.  Okay, not all the guys were your “teenage dream,” but my favorite was Steve.  All my friends wanted their secret crush to be him.  Don’t  forget this classic line when playing the game!  “I know who it is, but I’m not telling. Ha! Ha!”

4. Jenga

Even though this technically is not considered a board game, I couldn’t resist including this in my list of childhood favorites.  Stacking blocks strategically and meticulously taking one block out and placing it on top of the tower, made you think and nervous at the same time! The last thing you wanted to do was to topple that tower. Sometimes this game could go on for hours!

5. Connect Four

This game was “checkers meets tic-tac-toe.”  It was fun, kept you on your toes, but there was a science behind this game.  There were specific tricks to set your opponent up so that you could “connect four.” Connect Four was one game I could play multiple times and not get easily bored.

6. Candyland

Candyland is a childhood favorite!  A board game all about sweets? Yes please!  I remember playing this as a kid using the gingerbread man candy piece, in hopes I would make it to “Candy Castle.”  Also, who didn’t love the brightly colored trail, passing through “Gumdrop Mountain” and “Peppermint Forest!”

7. Monopoly

Even though the original version is classic, now there are TONS of themed Monopoly games! You name it, and they probably made it into a Monopoly board.  Everyone wanted to be the banker and loved handling the money.  We all yearned for the “get of jail free card” and for someone to land on any property you owned!  It was all about the $$$$. Growing up, I remember always having to stop the game halfway because it would take forever to finish!
