What I Learned From Being on an Athletic Team in College (2)

Positivity is a force people take for granted way too much.

best

This story is a recent one form our first home tournament. We invited our alumni to play on their own team- and although they were old they were insanely good at the sport. Some played professionally and were even nationally recognized. We expected to get “bageled” (not to score a single point). But that ended up being our best played game. What really got us going was that we wanted it. Each point we scored every member of our team ran out and celebrated. When people made a mistake we didn’t stop and sulk. In the end we scored 4, deserving points. It was probably the best time I had playing this sport.

It’s important not to take criticism personally. It’s even more important to listen to it.

need

There have been times when I messed up, and I knew I did, but at this point in my ultimate career I was just upset to admit it. I’d get angry at myself because I knew my captains would point it out. I thought if they saw my mistake, they’d give up and stop seeing me as a viable option. But I wasn’t a kid anymore, so when the captain drew attention to my mistake I asked questions. I tried to get better, just like I did when I started the game. I’ve been playing a while, but there is always more to learn.
