10 Things Black Students Hate Hearing at Mostly White Colleges (5)

2. Professors focusing on you – One of the most uneasy situations to deal with is when the topic in class turns to black history (or anything to do with black people) and basically the whole time the professor LOOKS DIRECTLY AT YOU. Not only looking but nodding, asking for your agreement, etc. This in turn makes the entire class focus on you which sucks and happens to be a very cruel and unusual punishment for shy students in particular.

1. “Can I touch your hair?” – I understand the curiosity of something that you’ve never felt or dealt with before and most times I’ll say sure. But after so long, it gets old. Imagine if every time you washed, straightened, or changed your hair in any way, 20 people ask to feel your hair every single place you go. We kind of begin to feel like a human petting zoo. By the way, there is a big difference between feeling and rubbing your hands all over someone’s head for 15 minutes.
