Birds are truly amazing animals. For a long time, us humans have watched birds as they’ve ruled the skies, wishing that we, too, could someday possess the powers of flight for ourselves. How exhilarating would it be to glide through the air without having to worry about coming back down? To be able to float around in the sky for hours and forget all the worries of the surface world?

Wikipedia

It would be fantastic, and birds are interesting for plenty more reasons than their flight capabilities. There are more than 9,000 recorded different species of birds in the world, and as we explore more uncharted regions that number only continues to rise. Birds can be found anywhere, inhabiting the snowy tundras of Antarctica as well as Africa’s barren deserts.

Wherever you go in the world, you’ll find different species of birds that vary in highly unique ways from each other. Some birds, like parrots, have the ability to talk, while owls and hawks make for excellent predators with their enhanced senses and arsenal of natural weapons. Birds are just plain cool looking, too, especially when they perform particularly exciting acrobatic feats.

Some birds, like cardinals, are beautiful and have coloration in their feathers that’s rarely found elsewhere in nature. Some birds are more suited to the water than the sky, swans swimming about gracefully while baby ducklings wobble about in a hilarious manner. Other birds call neither the skies nor the water home, such as the extinct dodo bird or the flamingo.

And have you ever seen a kiwi? Those things are crazy! They have this long, thin beak, sort of like a mosquito’s tail, but their bodies are round and odd-looking. And they’re called kiwis. How much more do you want out of your animal? Birds are also important to keeping natural cycles in balance by feeding on insects or other, larger critters to keep the ground-dwelling population free of pests.

Up next we’ll take a look at some cool facts about birds you definitely haven’t heard before.

Even though animal birth defects are technically abnormal and may somehow impact the animal negatively, some of them can be pretty cool or useful. We’ve all seen pictures of critters born with two heads, or an extra leg, or maybe with a strange coloration before. In humans, birth defects are the number one cause for infant mortality, but they can add to the charm an animal has.

Defects can affect any organ system or part of an animal’s body. Breeders especially try to weed out any odd characteristics a potential pet or show animal might have. Some abnormalities might only have a slight affect on the animal, or lessen over time until they’re not really an issue, which is always a good thing. Some, however, have negative consequences that can’t be cured.

The thing is, getting a pet checked for potential birth defects is really the only way to ascertain whether or not there’s anything wrong with them. Some defects are internal or develop over time, so aren’t immediately apparent. Usually, these are the defects with the worst possible repercussions. But checking your dog or cat for defects can be both painful and pricey.

If you’re worried that your pet might have a defect, or want to make sure that he or she doesn’t, you should first seek a veterinarian’s advice. If your puppy’s having medical issues, those may be resolved more easily than a check. The only real defects you can be sure of are physical ones; maybe your cat’s tail’s too short or she has oddly-colored fur.

Internal issues usually can’t be noticed until the animal has already started developing symptoms and will need treatment to get better. Some defects can take weeks or months to show up, which is why it may be a safer bet to get a dog or cat than a puppy or kitten. It’s also important to know your pet’s family; if your cat’s mother or father had bad teeth, for example, there’s a good chance your little guy could’ve inherited them.

In this day and age you’re not likely to see a wax figure outside of a history museum, except for the occasional uncanny valley versions that people sometimes make of celebrities. In the modern era, wax figures are considered odd, kitschy, and creepy.

With their glassy eyes and mushy looking skin, the manmade effigies have given many a child a nightmare. Although today we use them either to learn about our past or worship celebrities of the present, they were originally created to- well actually they were pretty much always used for that.

Wax figures can be traced all the way back to the middle ages when they were sometimes used as offerings to the churches. The figures were meant to preserve the memory and visage of monarchs and other great parsonages through a wax mask. Much like the entire plot of Night at the Museum.

However, even back then the general populace found the dead-eyed stare of wax figures to be somewhat unsettling, and superstitious beliefs soon began to circle them. In fact, wax figures were used as a sort of early voodoo doll and were sometimes made in the image of enemies.

When the enemy wax figure was complete, people would stick long pins through them, an act that was thought to be even more effective if the wax figure was made with some of the actual person, such as their hair or fingernails.

This was not overly strange behavior for the time period, and similar practices were discovered in the Scottish Highlands. They used clay instead, but implemented the same method of making the figure in the likeness of their enemy. The Scotts would then place the figure in the river and allow it to be carried away, believing that as the clay figure washed away, so to would the health of the enemy.
