Whether or not we want to admit it, we’ve all had to deal with bullying at one point or another in our lives. Whether we witness or are the target of bullying, you simply can’t ignore it. According to the CDC, the primary elements of bullying include unwanted aggressive behavior, observed or perceived power imbalance, and the repetition of behaviors.

The current definition of bullying recognizes four different types and two different modes of bullying. Bullying can be either direct or indirect, though it’s not known which of the two is worse. Direct bullying involves face-to-face confrontation between the bully and his or her victim while indirect bullying is usually conducted through a medium, such as text. Bullying can be physical, verbal, relational or damage to property.

The unfortunate truth of the matter is that bullying can and will occur anywhere and under any circumstances. It can happen at schools or at the workplace. No matter how old you are, you’re never not affected by people being mean to others, although children and teenagers are especially susceptible (and likely to be the target) of bullying.

The figures prove it, too. Somewhere between 1 in 4 and 1 in 3 U.S. students have admitted to being the victims of bullying. That’s either 25% or 33%, which is simply an unacceptable rate for children to be dealing with this kind of abuse. Although schools try to stop bullying through programs and punishment, the fact remains that kids will always find a way to be mean to each other unless they’re taught to behave properly.

That’s why it’s always nice to hear of people standing up to bullies; it can be a good way to teach people to behave while also restoring a bullied child’s self-confidence.
