8 Ways To Eat Relatively Healthily In The Dining Hall

When you’re living on campus and getting all your meals at the dining hall, you might find yourself packing on more pounds than you thought you would.  That’s because it’s hard enough to avoid all the “bad” foods but it’s even harder when you’re eating buffet style and most of the things offered at the buffet are “comfort food” type of dishes with lots of carbs, fat, and sodium.

There are healthy options hiding in the dining hall, though maybe not as many as we might like.  It’s all about making the right choices.  And it sounds simple, but that’s the hardest part.  Keep these tips in mind while you’re loading your plate at the dining hall.

8. Use a smaller plate, if possible.

Hopefully your dining hall has different sized plates available.  If they do, you want to go for a medium sized one instead of a giant dinner plate.  By filling up a medium sized plate instead of a large one, you’ll trick yourself into thinking you’re eating more, but really you’re not.

7. Resist the urge to go back for seconds.

The reason buffets are a great value for your money is the fact that you can go back for more as many times as you want.  That’s also the really really bad thing about buffets.  Get yourself a full meal on your first trip through the buffet and know that you don’t need anymore when you finish that meal.

6. Hit the salad bar at every meal.

You need to have some greenery with every meal.  It’s good for you, and it’s better to fill up on than some of the other junk food.

5. Choose lighter dressings for your salad.

The creamier salad dressings have way more fat and calories.  Adding a lot of it to your salad pretty much negates the benefits of getting a salad.  Opt for lighter vinaigrettes and you’ll be better off.
