Kristen High and Kenitha Saafir died as a result of hazing by the Alpha Kappa Sigma chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha in 2002.  A lawsuit was filed in their name after they were required to do multiple hours of exercise, and then walk backwards into the ocean.  Saafir was swept by a wave out to sea, and High attempted to help her, knowing that she could not swim, resulting in both girls drowning.  It was later discovered that this particular chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha had not been recognized nationally or by the school since 1989.

A group of students filed a claim that some sororities at this school were hazing their pledges in various heinous methods.  These rituals ranged from throwing them into a freezing shower while making them recite the Greek alphabet, having them hold hot hookah coals in their hands, to giving them pills that caused them to vomit on each other.  The entire Greek system was shut down after these allegations came to light, reopening under new guidelines after five months of intensive investigation.

Britteny Starling sued the Zeta Phi Beta sorority after she claimed that she had been victimized  by vicious hazing tactics.  They played a game called “Human Garbage Can”, where they forced girls to clean up juice on the floor using their backs, dumped trash all over them, and forced pledges to serve as garbage cans for the sisters, carrying trash around in their pockets all day.

The sorority denies Starling’s claims; however, their charter was revoked, and it is no longer a recognized sorority on Berkeley’s campus.
