To My First College Friend

Dear first college friend,

Starting college was actually the most terrifying, yet exciting time of my life. I knew immediately once I stepped onto the college campus that I would make many wonderful memories here. I planned on making new friends, joining new clubs and learning more about myself. However, meeting you has easily been the highlight of college so far.

College orientation was nerve-wrecking, I heard so many horror stories of having a crazy roommate or feeling totally awkward in the group. The moment I met you at one of our orientation ice-breakers, I smiled a sense of relief when I found out we were rooming together for the next three days.

Although we seemed very different at first, we came to realize how much we had in common. We had the same majors and were passionate about it, we wanted to sign up for the college radio station and neither of us took ourselves too seriously.

We then spent the next three days of orientation staying up late, ordering in food, sharing high school stories and our hopes for college. We sat next to each other at every required event and nudged each other under the table when we found something funny. At the end of our three days together we bought matching collegiate shirts and hats.

After move-in day, it was obvious that we would go to our first college party together. We spent the night catching up about the rest of summer, meeting new people and of course we had to tell EVERYONE that we were orientation roommates or as we said “day ones”. We took Instagram pictures together, had lunch dates and attacked each other whenever we met around campus.

As the months passed, we eventually got busy with classes, extra-curricular activities and new friends. We stopped going out together and we would forget to answer each others texts. It wasn’t that we stopped being friends, we were just exploring everything college had to offer.

Although time passed, whenever we ran into one another it always felt like old times. We would scream from the other side of the party and throw ourselves onto each other and say “day oneee”.

Even though we may not see each other everyday, I am so thankful to have you in my life. You have made the transition from high-school to college much easier for me, because you were there from the begining. I know when I need someone I can always turn to you to eat an entire pint of ice cream and watch Netflix. I can’t wait to experience everything else college has to offer with you by my side.

Thanks for always being there day one.
