How Hofstra Students Can Take Advantage of Our Abnormally Long Winter Break

For Hofstra students, “winter session” offers an extended vacation to students not taking classes in the month of January. The concept of longer time seems enticing. However, by the end of the month we can get that cabin-fever feeling that comes with a lack of activity. And we can start to miss the Hofstra campus, the clubs we’re a part of, and even the classes we take. These ten ways show how we can take advantage of the vast amount of time we have off.

10. Take a class you wouldn’t want to deal with during a full semester.

There are a multitude of pesky classes we must take for distribution. On the other hand, there are those exceptionally hard classes we must take for our major. Taking these classes during winter session prevents us from having to worry about them during a semester loaded with other credits.

9. Spend time at Hofstra’s (or your local) Fitness Center.

working out

We all make promises to ourselves that during the semester we will have a workout schedule. Once our workload gets too heavy, this falls to the wayside. Hofstra’s gym is open to all students during the winter session. For those not on Long Island, many gyms offer one-month memberships and discounts for students on break.

8. Binge watch a show on Netflix you’ve been meaning to get to.

Breaking Bad, Orange is the New Black, Wilfred, House of Cards, Arrested Development, Bloodline, The Blacklist, American Horror Story, and so many more.

7. Finally clean out/remodel your childhood bedroom.

This is scary, but I still slept in the same racecar sheets until recently. Getting to that housework you’ve put off can clear your living space so that it mirrors the college dorm you’ve kept clean all semester (hopefully).

6. Embark on one of Hofstra’s Study Abroad programs for winter session.

Studying abroad with Hofstra is not something to be simply overlooked. The opportunity includes exploring a new culture under the advisement of an instructor who becomes more of a guru than a typical college professor.
