A Letter To The Freshman You Were: One Year Ago (2)

It is also extremely easy to get distracted. Sometimes it is not so easy to concentrate with so much action going on around you. There are parties, invites, clubs, and more. You realize that you are officially the leader of your own life and there is no longer anybody there to shield you away from these distractions. There is no ranting from your parents to make sure you are on top of everything (except maybe through the phone which is still not the same). And, your parents are definitely not there to tell you that you should skip going out to stay in and study for your exam.

Whether you are now best friends with your roommate or you hate their guts you also noticed that living with somebody is no piece of cake (unless perhaps you have shared a room in the past). You were likely to get angry if your roommate’s alarm clock went off at 5 am when your first class didn’t start until noon. You got annoyed when your roommate hogged up the bathroom when you desperately needed to take a shower STAT. But you dealt with it. You really didn’t have a choice.

You probably grew away from some of the friends from high school that you thought would be in your life for the long run. You faced the unfortunate fact that you were so close because you saw each other every single day in high school. But, you also learned how to make new friends — the friends who will be in it for the long run.

You may have decided that you absolutely hate your major, or that you still have no idea what you want to make of yourself, and that is totally okay. College is the time to figure this out! Remember, you want to enjoy what you are going to study for the next four years and love what are going to do for the rest of your life.

You learned that textbooks are extremely expensive and you do not even use them half of the time. You eventually figured out that you should do your readings, not skip class, and you should do all of your homework the hard way. You had an epiphany that now you are paying for your education and that you get what you put in.

To sum it up, this year has been one heck of a year. You are so grateful for all of the lessons you have learned, memories you have made, and events you have encountered. You can finally say you did it. You completed your first year as a freshman, and you are so ready to take on sophomore year!
