Struggles Only Big City College Students Would Understand (3)

9. The Potential Dangers (Especially for Girls)

In general, cities aren’t nearly as dangerous as the media paints them out to be; there’s not a cartel on every corner or a creep hiding in each bush waiting to assault the next girl who walks by. However – and this goes doubly for college girls – you still have to be careful in the city. You shouldn’t walk at night, explore strange places alone without letting a friend know where you went, etc. Being so hyperaware of your surroundings can be a bit of a weight on city students’ shoulders, but it’s much better than the alternative. Making this better is the fact that your parents will never, ever, ever, ever, EVER let you forget that the city can be unsafe.

8. Living Off-Campus

Living off-campus for urban college students can be much more difficult than for their rural counterparts. It’s so expensive to live in a city that you have to work constantly alongside your studies and deal with the horrendous public transportation on a daily basis (alongside the usual difficulties of living on your own as a student).

7. School Sports Take a Hit

While it varies from college to college, having a college in the middle of a city can make training for sports complicated. Some schools take a hit and simply eliminate certain programs for the sake of room – no football field, no football team! – and others are forced to send athletes to other schools or local fields for training. For city students, the Hollywood-style sports season with every student decked out in team colors and following the team wherever the games take them is a bit of a pipe dream.
