Why Your Freshman Year Roommate Will Teach You Valuable Lessons (3)

It’s also important to know yourself mentally and emotionally when living with someone because it’s important that both you and your roommate are comfortable. There are some days when we just need to be alone and if you don’t tell your roommate this then they may not give you the space you need. I for one have some days when I just want to be left alone and sleep all day, but that’s not going to be possible if you share a room with someone. You can’t kick them out of their own room, but at the same time they should respect your privacy and your wishes. Again, you need to come up with a compromise. It may not always be easy, but it’s necessary.

Another lesson you’ll learn from living with a roommate is that you have to remember it’s not just your room. You can’t make decisions based solely on what you want, you have to consider that there’s a second person living with you. You and your roommate are two different people so you can’t just always assume that certain things you do will be okay with them and vice versa. For example, if you want to have friends spend the night in your room then just double check with your roommate that it’s okay because sometimes it isn’t. You may trust your friends but that doesn’t mean that your roommate does. Since you’re sharing a room that means you’re not only trusting your friends with your stuff but also with your roommate’s.
