19 Things I Wish I Could Tell My Younger Self (4)

One bad test grade will not determine your life.

You’re a perfectionist and won’t let anyone tell you to conduct yourself otherwise, but just realize that getting a 64 on that one pop-quiz is not going to ruin your life.

That isn’t to say that you shouldn’t try your hardest on everything. It all adds up.

Taking the lazy route will only result in setbacks, creating more work for you in the long run. Get your shit done, put the energy you’re using to complain into being proactive, then relax when it’s all over. Things won’t be handed out to you left and right, nor should they be.

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

This is important. Do not, by any means, put every ounce of your energy into one class, one skill, or one person. You need to divide your efforts between everything you do and everyone you love because if for some reason that one thing goes to shit or leaves, you’re not left completely helpless.

Recount the happy times and try to deprive your mind of the bad ones.

It’s psychologically proven that bad times are easier to remember and more readily available to our minds, but if you put in that extra effort to think about all of the momentous, worthy times in your life, your life will be so much more fulfilling at the end of the day. The world is full of corruptions; don’t make your mind one of them.

Appreciate all of the little moments.

Life is made up of and determined so much by the accumulation of all of the little things in life. When something is gone, sure you’ll remember the main things that made it great, but most of the time it’s the little things that you tend to miss. Find beauty in the small things: the way the sun shines into your window, the way your friend describes you to a stranger, or the simple fact that the line to get into the dining hall is shorter than usual.

That piece of pizza won’t make you fat.

Eating badly for one meal or even a whole day will not change anything. Feeling bloated and being fat are two tremendously different things, so stop being so hard on yourself. Eat that piece of pizza, then eat another one. Even slop up some ranch along with it if that’s what you’re in the mood for.
