I’m about to break down for you the most common grammar mistakes that will seriously hurt your future papers, cover letters, or resumes. 1. Your/ You’re.
Your = Possession
Ex. Your butt looks nice in those leggings.
You’re = You + are
Ex. You’re an idiot.
2. They’re/ Their/ There.
They’re = They + are
Ex. They’re going to have a banger tonight.
Their = Possession
Ex. Their food in the dining hall is disgusting.
There = Location
Ex. The keg is over there.
3. Than/ Then.
Than = Comparison
Ex. That assignment was easier than our last one.
Then = Anything besides comparing
Ex. I was a bitch back then.
4. Are/ Our.
Are = Plural, present tense of “be”
Ex. Are you going to the football game?
Our = Belonging to multiple people
Ex. This is our house.
5. “Should of”.
No. Just no. It’s should HAVE.
Ex. I should have gone to class today.
6. Affect/ Effect.
Affect = Verb
Ex. Don’t let a guy affect your schoolwork.
Effect = Noun
Ex. The D.A.R.E. program had no effect on my decisions.
7. It’s/ Its.
It’s = it + is or it + has
Ex. It’s going to be a long night of studying.
Its = Possession
Ex. The mascot did its routine.
8. “Alot”.
No. There is a space so it’s “a lot”.
Ex. There’s a lot of people in class today.
