Son of Murdered NYC Cop Receives Full Ride From Bowdoin College

As most everyone in the United States has heard, two members of the NYPD, Officer Rafael Ramos and Officer Wenjian Liu were fatally shot on December 27th in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bedford Stuyvesant. The assailant, Ismaaiyl Brinsley, fled the scene, ultimately committing suicide at a nearby subway station as cops pursued him. Some see this crime as a direct result of the recent protests against police brutality and some see it as misplaced anger. Despite the polarized opinions, one thing is certain: Two families lost beloved male figures and they will be forever missed.

In particular, the Ramos family has lost an important caretaker, leaving them without a father and a large means of emotional and financial support. Rafael Ramos’ son, Justin Ramos, is a 19-year-old college student now plagued with grief and an unsure future. Attending Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, Justin’s education costs $59,000 per year. A formidable number for any working family. In the wake of these tragedies, the Ramos family has received generous donations from two organizations.

Just a few days after the events of the 27th, the Yankee Silver Shield Foundation held up their mission and offered to pay Justin’s college tuition for the remainder of his education. While grateful for such an offer, Bowdoin College itself has also offered to waive the Ramos family of its hefty tuition.  On December 22nd, the college announced:

“At President Mills’s direction, Dean of Student Affairs Tim Foster informed Justin [Ramos] early Sunday morning that the College will provide full financial aid to enable him to complete his Bowdoin education.”

Being a college sophomore, Justin has several years of school ahead of him, whether he takes a break to grieve or not, and the tuition would prove difficult to cover at such a time. Bowdoin’s selfless offer proves the school a unique institution dedicated more so to education than business. Bowdoin’s official statement further reads,

“This is in keeping with Bowdoin’s practice of meeting the full financial need of each of our students for all four years. We are grateful for the Yankee Silver Shield Foundation’s offer to assist, but Bowdoin has it covered…”

While Justin’s younger brother Jaden, 13, has several years until he must make his decisions for a college education, the Yankee Silver Shield Foundation has already offered to cover the teenager’s tuition, no matter what institution he chooses. We, here at University Primetime, extend our condolences to the Ramos and Liu families and wish them the best in this time of need.
